Congo, Burundi Are Set to Sign Nile River Water Accord Rejected by Egypt (bloomberg.com)

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi may soon sign an accord on water usage from the Nile River, paving the way for ratification of a pact that strips Egypt of its rights to the flow from the world’s longest river.

On the Nile, Egypt cuts water use as Ethiopia dams for power

"Egypt deals with the Nile water issue as a life-and-death matter," said Moufid Shehab, Egypt's minister of state for legal and parliamentary affairs. "The River Nile provides Egypt with 95% of the country's water needs."

The 4,160-mile-long Nile is formed by the White Nile, which originates near Lake Victoria in Uganda, and the Blue Nile, which begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. They converge in Sudan and flow north through the length of Egypt before spilling into the Mediterranean Sea.

The river winds through poverty and turmoil and is vital for economic growth to sustain rising populations. It is a lesson in how water can dictate a nation's future, and threaten or preserve regional stability.

"The way forward," Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told Al Jazeera satellite TV channel, "is not for Egypt to try and stop the unstoppable."

Tensions Rise Over Access to the Nile River

Five African countries assert claim to Nile waters, but Egypt does not want to share

Several central African countries where the Nile originates are asserting their rights to use the waters for irrigation and hydropower, but Egypt, where the fabled river is largest and flows into the Mediterranean Sea, has unequivocally stated its opposition to a new division of the Nile's water. There is even talk of war.

The fabled river begins high in the Ethiopian mountains where an ancient monastery watches over the sacred Gish Abbai spring. The waters bubbling out of the ground feed Lake Tana then spill into a gorge to become the Blue Nile.

Giant Crack in Africa Will Create a New Ocean
A 35-mile rift in the desert of Ethiopia will likely become a new ocean eventually, researchers now confirm.
The crack, 20 feet wide in spots, opened in 2005 and some geologists believed then that it would spawn a new ocean. But that view was controversial, and the rift had not been well studied.
A new study involving an international team of scientists and reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters finds the processes creating the rift are nearly identical to what goes on at the bottom of oceans, further indication a sea is in the region's future.

INTERVIEW-Somalia says Eritrea deserves punishment for chaos
NAIROBI, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Eritrea should be punished for threatening the Horn of Africa region by supporting Somali rebels, Somalia's foreign affairs minister said on Sunday.
Eritrea a Nation Held Hostage (video)
Isaias Afewerki was hailed by Eritreans as the great liberator of the people when he became the nation’s first president in 1993. He represented a new breed of an African leader; young, charismatic, and determined to build a prosperous future. He brought hope to a nation that had for so long appeared hopeless. Isaias started to reconstruct the nation, promised to respect human rights, hold free and fair elections, and build a strong economy with jobs for all. Eritreans were to be rewarded for their struggle. But these rewards never came. Human rights groups say Eritreans are being imprisoned, tortured and killed in increasing numbers. Some are held in shipping containers in 50-degree heat, others in solitary confinement or in underground cells. The fairy tale has turned into a nightmare.

Save The Oil

October 12, 2009: The Ethiopian government is assuring oil companies that the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) does not have the military capabilities to threaten oil exploration and production operations in the Ogaden region. For the last two months ONLF spokespeople have issued statements warning foreign oil companies that they could suffer attacks on their Ogaden operations. The ONLF has accused foreign oil companies of exploiting the people of the Ogaden and “collaborating” with the Ethiopian government. In 2007 the ONLF launched a huge raid on a Chinese oil company project that left 74 people dead; that attack deeply embarrassed the Ethiopian government. After that attack the Ethiopian Army began a sustained counter-insurgency operation against the ONLF. The government has argued that the ONLF has suffered heavy losses and can no longer organize a major attack like the 2007 assault. That may or may not be true; the ONLF is still capable of small attacks, though lately the attacks seem to be confined to the Ethiopia-Somalia border area. The government, of course, has an economic interest in protecting oil operations.

October 11, 2009: A force consisting of “several hundred” Ethiopian Army soldiers left the Ethiopian town of Ferfer and raided three villages in Somalia near the Ethiopia-Somalia border. The Ethiopian unit arrested several suspected members of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and Somali Islamist extremists. The operation appears to be linked to the September 21 attack in the border area.

October 8, 2009: Britain announced that it is prepared to support extensive sanctions against Eritrea. Britain accused Eritrea of supplying weapons, training, and financial assistance to Somali Islamist extremists and militias.

Comment: ONLF, a terrorist organization with a possible link to Al-qaida has its headquarters in the West. The British must also deport all ONLF members and hand them to the Ethiopian Government, if they really are interested in eradicating terrorists in the Horn. If Britain or the West choose to harbor and assist terrorists, they are not different from Eritrea and the World must impose a sanction on them too.

Egypt Controls Most of Nile's Water
east africa is in the midst of a devastating drought--in Ethiopia, the dry spell has left close to 14 million people dependent on food aid. When assigning blame, aid workers and politicians finger the usual suspects: lack of rain, climate change, and an underdeveloped agricultural sector. But they're forgetting one: Egypt. Thanks to a 1929 agreement between Britain--acting on behalf of its East African colonies--and a newly independent Egypt, Cairo holds the rights to two thirds of the Nile's water, as well as veto power over upstream projects. The disparity is stark: Ethiopia is the source of 60 to 80 percent of the Nile's flow, but uses less than 1 percent of it because Egypt says no to large-scale irrigation projects. And though Ethiopians might be tempted to circumvent the anachronistic arrangement, they can't. Egyptian officials work "behind closed doors" to block funding for upstream projects, according to David Shinn, a former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia. The Nile states want to re-negotiate the ancient treaty, but Egyptian officials have stalled for years. And there's no sign they'll slake their neighbors' thirst any time soon.

Shaebia: A Threat to Ethiopia's National Security

It time for the sons and daughters of Atse Yohannes and Alula Aba Nega to wake up and bring the Eritrean regime down. What are waiting for? We have nothing to lose as far I am concerned. The West is not going to come to our rescue, the West is not a partner in our fight to eradicate poverty in Ethiopia. A campaign by the French and Italians to stop the building of dams that will enable us to expand the use of electricity through out the country is one example to why we shouldn't allow the West interfere in our affairs.A nation with out power as we know can't eradicate poverty and feed its people. Electric power is crucial to our development. Let's use our waters for they are ours. We don't get Oil from the Saudis for free, we don't get the proceeds from the Millions of dollars that Egypt earns from its tourist industry.I suggest that, Ethiopia, as the sole owner of the bulk of the water that flows to the Nile, must start charging the Egyptians and the Sudanese $100 dollars per barrel of water. We can't be told by the Arabs in Egypt not to use our waters when our people are starving from the lack of water when we have plenty of it. We can't be told by the Arabs in Egypt and their allies not to build dams for hydroelectric power in our country.

But, first we must eradicate the threat to our development and existence which is the Shaebia army!!Shaebia must not be allowed to train and arm anti-Ethiopian elements in the name of development, for there is no development when the enemy is constantly disrupting the peace . A poor country like ours can't make any progress as long as Shaebia is in power. The threat to Ethiopia's existence has been and still is Shaebia. This must be clear to all parties and the Ethiopian people must understand that there cannot be peace if there is a constant threat from a tiny and rogue nation of Eritrea in the north. After about thirty years of war, we lost our access to the sea and we are at the mercy of Islamic countries for our imports and exports. The people in power don't seem to understand the impact of not having an access to the sea. The people in power don't seem to understand that Eritrea could potentially form an alliance with the Arabs and be used as a staging ground to destabilize our nation.Eritrea, after getting its independence, which was only possible with the heavy sacrifices that Tigrian fighters paid in defeating the Derg, invaded Ethiopia claiming that Badime and other territories belonged to her. There is no such thing as Eritrean, for there is no nation called Eritrea. Eritrea is an Ethiopian province and the Red Sea is Ethiopia's territorial water, period. The government in power committed the crime of the Millennium by ceding our land and land locking a nation of over Eighty million people. What we Ethiopians need at this time is nationalists to lead our nation and defend her from its enemies. What we need at this time is nationalists to be in charge of our country and get rid of the Shaebia army which has been and still is a threat to our national security.

We have a lot to do in Ethiopia. We have a duty to utilize our waters which have a huge potential for building hydro-electric powers and make sure all Ethiopians have electricity in their villages and homes. Electrification is crucial to our development and progress. To fully utilize our rivers for hydroelectric powers, we must first unite and defend our nation from hostile neighbouring nations like Eritrea and Somalia. We must have a strong army which is able to defend the Ethiopian people so that they can fully concentrate on eradicating poverty. We can't make any progress if there is a constant threat to our national security, which is the Shaebia government that we helped create.

Somalia: A New al Qaeda Safe Haven? (abc)
Emerging Islamic Extremist Group Threatens U.S. Security, Experts Say

The impoverished, lawless country of Somalia is in danger of becoming the newest safe haven for al Qaeda, say counterterrorism experts.

A group of Islamic militants called al-Shabaab now controls much of southern and central Somalia, and U.S. officials fear that the group, which swears allegiance to Osama bin Laden, is now strong enough to take over the country's capital, Mogadishu, and defeat the weak, American-backed government there.

"U.S. security interests are gravely threatened if a country again becomes what Afghanistan used to be: a safe haven for al Qaeda, a government run by al Qaeda affiliates, and a place where al Qaeda supporters from around the world can come safely and train to get ready to launch terrorist attacks around the world," said former White House counterterrorism advisor and ABC News Consultant Richard Clarke.
There are also concerns that the Somali insurgents have recruited Americans.

Ethiopia to withdraw from Somalia by end of year(AP)

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Ethiopia announced Friday that it will withdraw its forces from Somalia by the end of the year, leaving this country's weak and fractured government to face an increasingly powerful Islamic insurgency.
Ethiopia — the region's military powerhouse — has sent thousands of troops to support Somalia's U.N.-backed government, which has failed to assert control over the country. The decision adds urgency to the Somali government's long-standing request for international peacekeepers to deploy here.

Ethiopia says detains Westerners for aiding rebels

GODE, Ethiopia (Reuters) - Ethiopia has arrested a number of American and European citizens of Ethiopian descent, accusing them of aiding separatist rebels, a senior Ethiopian official said on Friday.

GODE, Ethiopia (Reuters) - Ethiopia has arrested a number of American and European citizens of Ethiopian descent, accusing them of aiding separatist rebels, a senior Ethiopian official said on Friday.

"I can assure you they are many," Abdullahi Hassan, president of the country’s troubled Ogaden region, told journalists visiting the area at the government’s invitation.

He declined to say how many people had been detained or when they had been arrested.

"Those who are waging the terrorist war against our people are coming from Europe, are coming from America. They hold American passports, they hold European passports," he said.
Hassan said the detainees were originally from Ogaden but moved to the United States and Europe where they raised money for the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF).
"They are buying with this money weapons, mines and explosives," he said, adding that he would not contact their embassies because they were suspected terrorists.
"We don’t care whether they see (their diplomatic representatives) or not," he said, comparing the situation to the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, where nearly 300 inmates are being held without charge or access to consuls.

"In America ... al Qaeda members are in Guantanamo ... We are faced with the same problem,"he said.
A spokesman for the U.S. embassy said they had received no official notification from the government. "We are following up with Ethiopian authorities as we speak," he said.
Hassan said the detainees were being held in the eastern town of Jijiga. He said they would face trial, but did not say when, or on what charges.

The barren, ethnically Somali region made headlines in April when ONLF guerrillas attacked a Chinese-run oil exploration field and killed 74 people. Both the government and rebels accuse each other of committing human rights abuses.

The ONLF are fighting for autonomy for their remote region, which borders Somalia. The United Nations says nearly a million people there are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Ethiopia Challenges Rights Group on Ogaden War Crimes Allegations(VOA NEWS)

Ethiopia is challenging a Human Rights Watch report that accuses Ethiopian soldiers of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during a counterinsurgency campaign in its eastern Somali region. As we hear from correspondent Peter Heinlein in Addis Ababa, a team of Ethiopian investigators has issued a counter report charging the U.S.-based rights group with making false allegations based on flawed methods.

The 47-page document issued by Ethiopia's foreign ministry Wednesday is a reply to a 136-page report released by Human Rights Watch last June. The initial report is titled, "Collective Punishment: Crimes Against Humanity in Ethiopia's Somali Region". It accused Ethiopia's counterinsurgency forces in the Somali, or Ogaden region of a variety of war crimes, including torture and arbitrary executions of suspected members or sympathizers of the rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front, and burning villages suspected of harboring insurgents. The Human Rights Watch report was based on interviews with hundreds of people who had fled the region, backed up by satellite imagery of destroyed villages. But a government-appointed team of investigators led by independent consultant Lissane Yohannes rejected the Human Rights Watch findings. They issued a response titled: Flawed Methodology, Unsubstantiated Allegations." A video shown to journalists at a briefing Wednesday quoted commission members as saying villagers whom they interviewed flatly contradicted the Human Rights Watch conclusions."We visited all relevant areas and nearly all the villages Human Rights Watch mentioned by name. We met with people who could tell us they had not been killed or raped, as Human Rights Watch alleged," says an announcer. "We saw villages that had not been burned to the ground, as Human Rights Watch claimed."Ethiopian foreign ministry legal adviser Minelik Alemu mocked the Human Rights Watch's report, saying it contains inflammatory language. He also criticized the rights' groups' investigative techniques, which did not include visits to the Ogaden region."In light of the gravity of the allegations of crimes against humanity, we would have thought more serious investigation would have been called for," Minelik Alemu said. "But that was not done. If you look at the report, you would see it is based on the testimonies that it collected mainly through telephone. They never had any on the ground visit to the region."One of the authors of the Human Rights Watch report, senior researcher Leslie Lefkow told VOA in a phone interview that the group had several times submitted written requests to Ethiopia to visit the Ogaden during their investigation. She says there was no government response."In terms of our methodology, we stand by it 100 percent, and we would welcome a discussion with the Ethiopian government about the specific cases we mentioned," she said. "We did request access to Somali region several times formally by letter." Lefkow said she would welcome the opportunity to discuss with Ethiopian experts the contradictions between the two reports."We have been carrying out research into situations of conflict for many years, and these kinds of allegations that we've been duped by a rebel movement, it's not the first time we hear this," she said. "These are sort of standard government responses. And we are trained investigators. And then we corroborate the information through independent sources, and in this case including through the use of satellite imagery, where we were trying to verify that attacks on certain villages had actually taken place." Lefkow said she had not finished reading the Ethiopian report, but said she saw hope in Ethiopia's willingness to conduct an investigation. She said it was one of the first times in her long career in human rights activist that a country had taken the opportunity to issue a counter report. She said she would again try to contact officials in Addis and in the Ogaden region to discuss Human Rights Watch's continuing concerns about the conduct of Ethiopia's counterinsurgency campaign in the Ogaden.

Comment: If HRW really stands for Human Rights, why don't they report about the plights of the prisoners in Guantanamo and the civilian deaths in Afganistan and Iraq? Ethiopia is a sovereign country and they must stop inerfering in its affairs. Ethiopia has a right to fight domestic and foreign terrorists and any one who is employed or who works for HRW must be detained or deported to his/her country of origin immediately for assisting terrorists.

Obama's To-Do List: Somalia (Jonathan Stevenson)

Somalia, a genuine failed state, ranks alongside Sudan as the world's most conspicuous candidate for American attention in the early days of Barack Obama's administration. Last week, capping a series of territorial gains across the country, Islamist insurgents seized the port of Merka, and appeared poised for an offensive against the capital city of Mogadishu 60 miles to the north. Aspiring jihadists, averse to the risks posed in Iraq and Pakistan, are increasingly flocking to Somalia, which is 97 percent Sunni Muslim. At the same time, Somali pirates have become a significant maritime menace, with press reports suggesting that they are driving up prices of goods worldwide. Almost two years ago, U.S.-supported Ethiopian troops ousted the de facto government run by the Al Qaeda-linked Islamic Courts Union (ICU) from Mogadishu, installed an internationally recognized secular transitional government formed in exile, and remained in-country to support it along with an anemic African Union (AU) contingent. But the Ethiopians can't afford to stay much longer, and their repressive tactics have lost Somali hearts and minds, allowing the Islamists to regain social as well as military traction. Earlier this month, in a brutally populist application of sharia law, a 13-year old girl was stoned to death in the southern Somali city of Kismayu for alleged adultery in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators.

Haradheere residents said another group of Islamists had arrived in the town, apparently with less noble intentions.
"A group of Islamists met some of the pirates here and asked for a share of the ransom," one local man, who gave his name as Farah, told Reuters by telephone.
"The pirates promised them something after the ransom was paid. But there is no deal so far."

Ethiopia: Govt Worried Over Djibouti Port Tariff Plan

Land-locked Ethiopia sent its top trade official to Djibouti on Wednesday after the Red Sea state said it would introduce a new tariff on port services.

An Ethiopian government source told The Daily Monitor that Trade and Industry Minister Girma Birru was dispatched after Djibouti unveiled plans to introduce the tariff with effect from August 15.

The country's port is Ethiopia's main gateway for imports and exports after it lost the Red Sea ports of Assab and Masawa when Eritrea won its independence from Ethiopia in 1991.
Ethiopian officials say Djibouti earns about $300 million a year for handling some 4.6 million tones of Ethiopian goods.

Comment: Ethiopia's territorial integrity must be restored now!!! Ethiopia must have an access to the Sea now!!! Three Hundred million dollars could be used to build Hydro-electric powers that could help meet the energy needs of the country. The ports and territories given up by the current government with out the wills of the Ethiopian people must be reinstated now. When Ethiopians raised questions to why the government gave up the ports and land-locked the country, the response from the government officials was that we could use Djibouti's ports, as if it was free of charge! Ethiopia

It is the Water, Stupid! By GE Gorfu

Comment: If we Ethiopians unite, we don't even need a loan from JP Morgan Chase, we can easily finance the money needed to build dams in Ethiopia. This is our country that we are talking about. This is our waters that we are talking about. The Ferenj is the reason why we are landlocked. The ferenj is why we are at war with Eritrea. The Italians are the reason why we are starving!! Enough is Enough. I think we Ethiopians must realize that Egypt and Eritrea are allies on a mission to weaken Ethiopia and must unite and defend our nation. The Eritrean military machine must be annihilated and we Ethiopians must make sure that Eritrea is not used as a staging ground by our enemies to launch an attack on our nation. We must remember that most of the Land mines that were used by Eritrea during the 1998-2000 war were manufactured in Egypt.

We must unite and bulid small dams and large dams anywhere in Ethiopia. We must also build terraces to stop our fertile and top soil from reaching the mouth of the nile. We must build terraces at the sources of our great rivers and keep most of our waters in Ethiopia.

The Ferenj awarded our lands, Badime and others to Eritrea. Who do you think is behind this? The problem is we have a government who litstens to the Ferenj in the name of development. There cannot be a tangible and lasting development unless the Ferenj leaves us alone. We Ethioipians need electricity to develop our country. If the Ferenj is trying to block loans to stop the building of dams that could be used to produce electricity, then I say they are against our long term development endeavors and they should be told in no uncertain terms that this is un acceptable .

UN Relocates Mission Monitoring Ethiopia-Eritrea Dispute -AFP

Comment :There was no need and there is no need for UNMEE. What the hell is wrong with the Ethiopian government? If there was a reasonable person in the Ethiopian government, they could have used this opportunity as an excuse to make the Algiers agreement null and void. They are once again allowing the UN to accomplish its mission of awarding our lands in the border areas to Eritrea. Meles and Sebhat must go. We need nationalists to take over the government and deal with the Eritrean issue with out the involvement of the UN. Eritreans don't have a land that they consider theirs in Ethiopia, in fact, Eritrea belongs to Ethiopia and it is time for Ethiopians to march towards the Red Sea.

A Man who decapitated Ethiopia can't preach Ethiopiawinet

After blowing an irreversible damage to the motherland, cutting her head off and landlocking her , Seye and his supporters donot have a right to preach Ethiopiawinet. What prompted me to write about this is that not Seye's attempt to try to pretend to be the champion of Ethiopiawinet, but an article written by the one and only man with PHD, Tedros Kiros. I know some Habesha Proffessors who had PHD and were begging students to sign up for their classes in exchange for a good grade . Tedros Kiros, PHD reminds me of those proffessors who were praying for students to sign up for their classes so that they remain employed.

In Democratic countries, individuals who are found to have commited some sort of crime are not allowed to participate in the political process. In my mind, a person who fought for 17 years to decapitate our country and who helped create a terrorist state out of the northern most province of our country can't be a champion of Ethiopiawinet. If he was a true Ethiopiawi, he should have left the party that demoralized and weakened the true champions of Ethiopiawinet.

If Seye truly regretts what he did to mama Ethiopia was wrong, he must appologize and we will accept his appology, but we don't like to hear from Kiros Phd about Ethiopiawinet, who is a known supporter of the ONLF, a terrorist group and anti-Ethiopiawinet. Kiros Phd as an advocate of Kinijit can't lecture us about Ethiopiawinet.

ንዕቐት!!!

Donald Payne እንታይ ይገብር'ሎ? ባዕሉ'ዶ ክጥርሮ ደልዩ?

This man is sick and makes me sick to my stomach. The Ethiopian people must not allow this man to win. I read that some Kinijit supporters are talking about Ethiopiawinet while they are behind the notorious bill which is sponsored by none other than Donald Payne to weaken our country. We need a strong government in Ethiopia which stands for its people and is capable of stopping congressional predators like Donald Payne from meddling in our country's affairs. All parties that have a known relationship with Donald Payne and other enemies of Ethiopia must be barred from taking part in the political arena of our country. Take a look here what Donald Payne is doing not far from the trenches where the Ethiopian troops are stationed!! This guy is determined to destroy Ethiopia.

Use of force is the only way to claim our ports back

Ethiopia is one of the ancient nations that existed way before the Europeans started invading and partitioning Africa. One of the main reasons why Axum was the center of civilization and commerce was because of the fact that Axum had a port that enabled her to import and export its goods, and the port as you know, is located in the Red sea. The Axumites were the sole owners of the Red sea and its coastal areas and no one has a right to take away the very ports that helped them become the supper powers of their time.

If the Israelites can come back and create a new country called Israel, Ethiopians must also be allowed to claim back their Coastal areas by legal means if possible, if not by force, that they have owned since the biblical period. The Europeans have committed horrific crimes when they were grabbing lands from sovereign countries like Ethiopia. The map they created for Ethiopia carving out the coastal areas is evil and was designed to weaken our country and is not acceptable to any Ethiopian.
Look at the map of this ancient nation and see for your self the malice of the Europeans. Their intention to land lock Ethiopia and harm Ethiopians is not acceptable and must not be used to demarcate the border between Ethiopia and the country they try to create in the North.
A country of about eighty million can't be denied an access to the sea because the Europeans said so. An ancient nation can't be with out ports because the invaders said so.

The institution of European colonialism was barbaric and anything they did in Africa was based on greed and the world must not reward these greedy Europeans for creating havoc in the horn by denying our nation an access to the sea, the sea that was used as an outlet to the outside world and was crucial to the emergence of the great Axumite civilization.
TPLF leaders admitted that they have fought for the secession of Eritrea more than any one else and fulfilled the dreams of Europeans and others to weaken Ethiopia by closing its only outlet to the outside world. These traitors not only gave up our Sea shores, but also caused the deaths of thousands of Tigreans in Eritrea for nothing. The ultimate beneficiaries of the struggle and sacrifices of Tigrean youths are enemies of Ethiopia not Tigreans or Ethiopians as the traitors would try to convince us.
Meles, on his interview with Dimtsi Weyane, as if he is the sole owner of Ethiopia, said that " we never regretted, we never regret and we will never regret for ceding Eritrea." A party led by this traitor is responsible for the separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia. His comrade, Sebhat Nega, also told Dimsti Woyane that his party will defend Eritrea from any invaders. Having these kind of people in the leadership is dangerous and all Tigreans must be cautious this time around and learn from past experiences so as not to repeat the same mistakes ever again. Unlike Meles, all Ethiopians are very saddened to see their country loose its sea shores and ports and become dependent for all of its imports and exports on countries that could possibly be used as a staging ground to destabilize her.
Ato Abadi Zemo, a man who played a major role in the fight for the independence of Eritrea admitted that there is an advantage to being closer to the ports. He said that Tigray could have attracted many investors because of its proximity to the Red Sea, which is rightfully hers. These are the leaders that we have now in Tigray. These are the leaders who have been telling us, in order to justify their support for the secession of Eritrea, owning a port has not helped us in the past and will not help us in the future.

God Created man, TPLF leaders created Issaias
The main actors who played a major role in denying Ethiopia its access to the sea are Arab nations and TPLF leaders. Many Tigreans were taken to Nakfa by TPLF leaders to defend Shaebia during the successive campaigns by Derg to wipe out Shaebia's army. As a result, Shaebia was saved from surrendering or capitulating. Thousands of Tigrean Tegadelti died in Eritrean mountains and thousands more were wounded in the name of freedom we don't know from whom. Derg was ultimately defeated and we ended up losing our ports that we have owned for thousands of years. Right after the fall of the Derg, TPLF leaders became the advocates of Shaebia and helped Eritrea become an independent nation and Ethiopia lost its access to the sea. Ethiopia cannot afford to lose this very important and strategic sea and all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia must wage a war against those who are determined to destabilize her by closing her door to the outside world. Ethiopians must unite and march to the Red sea to claim our ports that we have had for thousands of years. Those forces who are behind the land locking of our nation must be removed from power and the forces who stand for the unity and territorial integrity of Ethiopia must be allowed to lead our country in its fight against these traitors and agents of the enemies of our country.
TPLF leaders saved Shaebia from capitulating in Nakfa and then awarded them our ports and territories. Now, after ceding Eritrea, our country is still at war with the same country that the TPLF helped create. There is no end to the war that started about 30 years ago that seemed to have ended in the 1990's . We were told that the war with Eritrea was ended for the sake of peace. It has been about 20 years since Eritrea was created and there is no peace in sight. In 1998, Eritrea started a war to annex Ethiopia's territories, during which over 40, 000 Ethiopians lost their lives and thousands more were displaced from their homes.
Ethiopian Defense Forces routed Shaebia's army in a matter of two weeks and Shaebia's army was on the run. Paradoxically, the same leaders who helped and strengthened Shaebia in its fight to break away from Ethiopia, stopped the advancing Ethiopian Forces from completely annihilating the forces of Mussolini. The same man they saved from being engulfed by the fires of the gallant Ethiopian Forces is now back to square one, he is once again creeping back to our borders. Ethiopia is again under the clouds of war, a cloud of war that I think needs a strong wind to disperse it and change its direction and force it to hover over Asmara and the palaces of Issaias Afewerki, which are becoming the heavens of the Jihadists.
Eritrea is one of those countries engaged in destabilizing the peace in the horn and is becoming a heaven for terrorists. We know that the leaders of the ICU and ONLF are using Asmara as a staging ground to launch their terrorist activities against Ethiopia. If so, the government of Ethiopia hs a responsibility to protect its borders and its people. The prime Minister, on his speech to parliament seems to go on circles when it comes to Eritrea. He tried to convince the parliamentarians that the main threat to Ethiopia's security are the Islamists in Somalia, not Shaebia as unusuall. There is no question that the Islamists in Somalia are a threat to the stability and national security of country, but the breeding ground for the terrorists in Somalia is none other than the newly created nation of Eritrea. Unless the terrorists are denied their only breeding ground in the horn of Africa and are allowed to stage their terrorist attacks against Ethiopia, Ethiopia can't have a robust economic growth and its existence can be at risk. In order to justify his "policy of not going to war with Eritrea, " Prime Minister Meles tried very hard to convince his supporters that Eritrea is no a threat to the economic development that are underway, where in reality it Eritrea which is openly backing the Jihadists in Somalia and in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. The murders of six Chinese oil explorers and 75 innocent Ethiopians committed by ONLF, where they use Asmara as a staging ground to laucnch their attacks on Ethiopians and its economic development is a provocation of war . Such acts of aggression by Eritrea against Ethiopia are a declaration of war against Ethiopia and its people, but the prime minister doesn't think so for he has a predilection for Eritrea.
The Algiers agreement must be nullified on the basis of the aggressive and terrorists activities of Eritrea against our nation. The Algiers agreement was also signed by Meles and his party who are the main actors who made it possible for Eritrea to break away from its motherland against the the wills of the Ethiopian people.
The violence in Kenya that resulted in the deaths of about 500 people also had an impact on the economies of all East African nations which use Kenyan ports for their imports and exports. The supplies of oil and other goods were disrupted by the violence. What we can learn from here is that the supplies of oil and other imported goods could also be disrupted in Ethiopia every time there is a crisis in the countries where we depend on for importing and exporting our goods, which will result in the slowing of our economy.
Ethiopians must be united and march towards the ports. Our ports were taken by force and they must be reinstated by force. We cannot afford our supplies to be disrupted or choked by the rogue state of Eritrea that we helped create.

Tigrayans want end to border row (BBC)

The region's Vice-President, Abadi Zemo, says this makes promoting economic development very difficult.

"Tigray is located up in the north. We have an advantage - we are located much closer to the sea than other towns.
"But having this situation between us and Eritrea, it has put us in a very odd situation," he says.

"An investor, when he comes to Tigray, he sees there is no war and there is no peace - that investor prefers to invest in the south.
"Had it been normal, Tigray might have been the best region in Ethiopia for investment."

Comment: Mr. Abadi Zemo, you are one of the reasons why we are landlocked, you are the reason why we are in a very odd situation, you are the reason why Tigray is under the clouds of war. You are the reason why we lost Badime. So, what is the solution, Mr Abadi Zemo? You must have a solution, right?

Why do you think being closer to the sea has an advantage? Weren't you the ones who were preaching that there is no advantage of owning a port and we could always use Djibouti's ports and we would be all right? Thank you for admitting that being closer to the sea or owning a port has an economic advantage!!!

Seye can't be a hero for playing a major role in ceding Eritrea

When Shaebia blocked about 70, 000 starving Tigrians from entering Sudan in the 1984 famine, Seye and his comrades did nothing, and as a result, about 50, 000 Tigrians were left to die both from starvation and bombardment by Derg Air force.

  • Seye and his comrades are the reason why Ethiopia is landlocked.
  • Seye and his comrades did nothing to stop Shaebia from killing poor Tigrians during and after the fall of Derg.
  • Too late for Seye to act as a patriot for he is one of the engineers of the separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia.
  • TPLF did more harm than good to Tigrians and Ethiopians, where Seye was one of the decision makers.
  • A genuine hero is one who stands and defends the integrity and sovereignty of his country, and Seye did none of that.
  • A genuine hero would rather die than allow his country become land locked and Seye is not one.
  • Seye allowed Shaebia and Eritreans to be the sole beneficiaries of the sacrifices of tens of thousands of Tigrians.

Seye displaced and separated Tigrian families. Those families that were affected by Seye and his comrades decisions know what I am talking about. They are still suffering and living thousands of kilometers apart from each other. This doesn't make him a hero. Having been one of the architects of the secession of Eritrea doesn't make him a hero.

He would have been a hero if he opposed the decision of his organization to cede Eritrea . He would have been a hero if he stood and fought for the integrity and sovereignty of Ethiopia. In my judgement, no one in the leadership of TPLF is a hero. They all fought to facilitate the secession of our northern most province thereby land locking our ancient nation. This is the only achievement of their 17 years of struggle. They made it easier for Shaebia and enemies of Ethiopia to declare victory. Shaebia would have been completely annihilated by Derg's "NEBELBAL" and our security and integrity would not been compromised. TPLF played a major role in defending Shaebia during "Selahata Worar" and I am sure Seye was there to rescue Shaebia , and as you all know, taking part in a fight to defend and rescue a separatist group doesn't make one a hero, in fact that makes him a traitor.

And now, if he(Seye) has been seen with individuals like Berhanu Nega and his supporters, well, I might as well start "Salsay Woyane." I say enough is enough. Tigrians have suffered during your 17 years as a guerrilla fighter. You don't represent Tigrians and it is time for you and all TPLF leaders to apologize for the suffering that the people of Tigray endured during the past 30 years. It is time for you and your comrades to leave Tigrians alone and go to a retirement village.

You guys screwed up big time. Ethiopia's national security is at risk because of your stupid decision to cede Eritrea endangering the livelyhood of Ethiopians. We have no ports because of you, Mr. Seye Abraha. We are landlocked because of your poor decision, Mr. Seye Abraha. Do you understand the economic impact of being land locked? Now Ethiopia is at the mercy of its hostile neighbors for its imports and exports. Do you understand that denying Ethiopians an access to the sea is the crime of the Millennium?

Is Seye a hero?

According to Miriam Webster's Dictionary, Hero is: 1 a: a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability b: an illustrious warrior c: a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities d: one that shows great courage

A hero is a man or woman (then often called a heroine), traditionally the protagonist of a story, legend or saga, commonly possessed of powers far beyond that of a standard human, which enable him or her to perform some truly extraordinary, beneficial deed (an "heroic deed") for which he or she is famous. These powers are sometimes not only of the body but also of the mind. Heroes are typically opposed by villains. ( http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definition/hero)

In the last 30 years, the people of Tigray have been through a lot. Over 100, 000 Tigrians were displaced by Derg and forcefully taken to south western Ethiopia. Many of them didn't make it to Tigray. A number of them crossed the border to Sudan and many of them died on their way back to Tigray. Thousands of them died while they were aboard the Russian made Antonov and many of them were killed by the locals upon arrival. Tigrians were paying the ultimate sacrifice while Seye and company were defending Shaebia's last line of defence. Tigrians died in the thousands while TPLF leaders were busy trying to save Shaebia's stronghold, Nakfa. While Tigrian farmers were dying or being displaced by Derg, the future of Tigray, the best and the brightest were being slaughtered in Eritrea while trying to save Shaebia . If seye was a man of courage, if Seye is a hero, as many of you portray him to be, he should have made a courageous decision and at least tried to stop the deployment of Tigrian Tegadelti to Eritrea.

Seye and his comrades created a monster, as a result, the people of Tigray are still under the clouds of war. Seye can't tell us, after committing the crime of the millennium, that he is for the sovereignty of Ethiopia. He should have raised this issue right after the fall of the Derg in 1991 and allowed all Ethiopians to make a decision on the fate of Eritrea.

Seye was in power when his party was fighting for and endorsing the secession of Eritrea from its motherland; therefore, I don't know about you, but he is not my hero, for denying Ethiopia an access to the sea is not truly an Extraordinary, beneficial deed (heroic deed) to the people of Ethiopia!
